5 must-see spots on your trip to El Hierro

The island of El Hierro is the westernmost of the Canary Islands, where you can find both coastal and mountainous landscapes. In this blog, we'll reveal which of these wonderful natural spots you absolutely can't miss if you come to visit this island.

Restinga Natural Reserve

This natural reserve of volcanic origin is located in the Atlantic Ocean and reaches depths of more than 300 meters.

Its waters are characterized by being calm due to being in the trade wind zone and by harboring a wide variety of species that are not found in the rest of the archipelago.

Blue puddle

The blue pool is a set of natural pools located on the coast of the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces.

In 2013 it achieved the international Ecoplaya flag award for its large size and safety, for both adults and children, as it also has a children's pool with a smooth bottom.

It has parking nearby, restrooms and a kiosk in case you need to finalize any last-minute details.

Circular route of the Plain

Known for its contrasting landscapes, this route located in Valverde in the north of El Hierro features seven kilometers of, on one side, humid and dense forests that are part of the protected area of the rural park of La Frontera, and on the other side, blackened sands and coastal landscapes that will take you to the magnificent Gulf.

The village and swimming pools of Pozo de las Calcosas

Without a doubt, one of the must-see stops if you want to explore this beautiful island is the natural pools of Pozo de las Calcosas, located in the municipality of Valverde. It's a small, natural bay enclosed by a cliff where you can learn about life on the island years ago.

You can enjoy a peaceful swim surrounded by nature and see the houses with thatched roofs or made of plant materials that the old fishermen used to build for summer vacation.

El Hierro Giant Lizard Recovery Centre

Within the Ecomuseum of Guinea is this center dedicated to the captive breeding of the Galliota Simonyi, declared as the most threatened reptile in Europe and among the five most endangered in the world.

Visiting hours are Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00.
