COUNTERMAPS
Contramapas is a project created on the island of Gran Canaria. It consists of a month-long walking journey divided into 25 stages, from La Graciosa to El Hierro, following the GR131 trail, known as the Canary Islands Crossing. This project offers the opportunity to immerse oneself in the rich ancestral culture of the Canary Islands in an organic way, following the imaginary line that connects Lanzarote with El Hierro. Those brave enough to undertake this journey will leave a lasting impression.
At the end of each stage, a community gathering takes place with workshops, concerts, and talks featuring traditional music and dance from the Canary Islands. Imagine the energy and connection that will be generated across more than 30 municipalities!
To ensure the six hikers on this year's team get plenty of rest, the trip is being organized with two vans, each driven by a different person. According to the hikers, the leg in Fuerteventura was the most challenging due to the island's aridity, as the trek took place inland.
CONTRAMAPAS is part of Sinapsis, a program of the Government of the Canary Islands that promotes research, training and development of innovative cultural projects with social and environmental impact.
It's a fascinating project that combines adventure, culture, and community in a single journey!
